K. Sætre Rederi orders zero-emission cargo vessel to accelerate coastal decarbonisation

20 January 2026

The Norwegian shipping company K. Sætre Rederi has contracted a new fully electric cargo vessel, marking a significant step in the decarbonisation of Norway’s coastal freight transport. Delivery of the vessel is scheduled for March 2028.

The 70-metre vessel, with a cargo capacity of approximately 3,400 tonnes, will be powered by a 13.3 MWh battery system, enabling an electric range of more than 270 nautical miles. This allows the ship to operate fully emission-free on large parts of the Norwegian coastline, largely using existing shore power infrastructure.

To accelerate coastal decarbonisation

The vessel will be built by Royal Bodewes, while Norwegian technology provider SEAM will deliver the electric propulsion and energy systems. The project is supported by a long-term freight agreement with 7 Steel Nordic, aligning zero-emission transport with the steel producer’s circular and sustainability strategy.

Designed for predictable coastal routes from Mo i Rana and other industrial hubs, the vessel demonstrates how battery-electric propulsion can be applied at scale in heavy commercial shipping. The ship will sail under the Norwegian flag and operate with Norwegian crew terms.

For policy makers and investors, the project highlights how targeted ship design, mature battery technology and existing port infrastructure can combine to deliver near-term emissions reductions in the maritime sector, while supporting industrial competitiveness and regional value chains.
